PRINT TYPE DEFINITIONS

Ilkley Camera Club have adopted the definition of monochrome and colour prints as issued by the PAGB and based on a definition by FIAP in 1991.

A) Monochrome Prints:

  1. All black and white and monochrome images are included.
  2. A black and white image which has been modified by the addition of a single tone to the entire image is defined as a monochrome print.

B) Colour Prints:

  1. All images other than those in (A) above are defined as colour images.
  2. A black and white image which has been modified by the addition of partial toning or by the addition of one colour to any part of the image is a Colour Print.

COMPUTER MANIPULATED IMAGES

These are permitted in all categories (see below with reference to Applied and Natural History Categories) providing that the work be largely based on PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES which must have been taken by the photographer.  All manipulation of the image shall be carried out by the photographer, or under his or her immediate control.   This can include cropping, masking, filtration etc., removing unwanted details and blemishes and the addition of the details of other photographic images taken by the photographer.   They should not include computer clip-art images or graphics from other sources.

Although digital imaging is allowed in the Record and Natural History categories, manipulation should be limited to contrast and colour corrections, cropping/re-sizing and cleaning up the image where necessary.   This should not alter the main content of the original photograph particularly in Natural History.

Computer generated work is not admissible – except in Creative Class 12

THE MOUNTING OF PRINTS FOR COMPETITION

All prints must be mounted on board.

Mounting board can be obtained from Art Shops or stationers. (Don Whitley is able to supply ready cut mounting and backing board at a very competitive price direct from an wholesaler)

The size of board must be (50 x 40 cm), no smaller or larger.

All prints need to have the above details on the back of the print.

If required the title may also be put on the front, though many Judges do not like this.

There is no minimum image size. It should be appropriate for the type of image such that the Judge can fully appreciate its qualities at a reasonable viewing distance.

Print mounting details.jpg

While there is no maximum image size, over large prints with no or insubstantial backing can result in very flimsy mounts that are not fit for purpose, since they twist and flex they soon start coming apart. This leads to adverse criticism by the Judge and consequent loss of marks. Any such prints received by the Print Secretary will be referred back to the photographer for remounting (time permitting) or withdrawal.

Failing an agreed solution any entries assigned to the wrong class or breach these rules may be removed by the Print Secretary whose decision is final.

If you require any further help or advice please see the Print Secretary or any other committee member.
