Print Format Rules

You need to comply with these print format and mounting rules to enter the Annual Print Competitions. The entry dates of each competition are shown in the programme.

The maximum number of prints in each competition is limited to two, whilst in the Photo-Panel one entry per member is permitted consisting of four to six prints. Prints can be either monochrome or colour dependent on the competition. Trade processing of prints is permitted.

All photographs must be the original work and the copyright of the photographer, who must be a current member of Ilkley Camera Club.

No print to be submitted in more than one competition. The same image may not be converted to mono, if the original was in colour or vice versa, or used in digital competitions or in club competitions in future years.

As well as the individual competition trophies all entries are competing for the T L Haigh Trophy.

The submitted photographs should be appropriate for the competition entered. However, all entries should be in accordance with these format rules.

PRINT TYPE DEFINITIONS

Ilkley Camera Club have adopted the definition of monochrome and colour prints as issued by the PAGB and based on a definition by FIAP in 1991.

A) Monochrome Prints:

  1. All black and white and monochrome images are included.
  2. A black and white image which has been modified by the addition of a single tone to the entire image is defined as a monochrome print.

B) Colour Prints:

  1. All images other than those in (A) above are defined as colour images.
  2. A black and white image which has been modified by the addition of partial toning or by the addition of one colour to any part of the image is a Colour Print.

COMPUTER MANIPULATED IMAGES

These are permitted in all categories (see below with reference to Applied Categories) providing that the work be largely based on PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES which must have been taken by the photographer.  All manipulation of the image shall be carried out by the photographer, or under his or her immediate control.   This can include cropping, masking, filtration etc., removing unwanted details and blemishes and the addition of the details of other photographic images taken by the photographer except in the following categories:

In the Applied Record, Natural History and Travel categories, manipulation should be limited to contrast and colour corrections, cropping/re-sizing and cleaning up the single image where necessary.   This should not alter the main content of the original photograph particularly in Natural History.

THE MOUNTING OF PRINTS FOR COMPETITION

All prints are to be mounted on board sized (50 x 40 cm), no smaller or larger.

Mounting board can be purchased from Art Shops or stationers. (Don Whitley is able to supply ready cut mounting and backing board at a very competitive price direct from an wholesaler. For further details please call him on 07855 598984).

All prints need to have a label on the back of the mount with the following details:

If required the title may also be put on the front, though many Judges do not like this.

There is no minimum image size. It should be appropriate for the type of image such that the Judge can fully appreciate its qualities at a reasonable viewing distance.

While there is no maximum image size, over large prints with no or insubstantial backing can result in very flimsy mounts that are not fit for purpose, since they twist and flex they soon start coming apart. This leads to adverse criticism by the Judge and consequent loss of marks. In such cases, the Print Secretary will ask the photographer to remount the print (time permitting) or withdraw it from the competition.

DIGITAL IMAGES OF PRINTS

Digital copies will be retained for record purposes, for use on our website and end of year presentation.  At the latter the images are projected and so the format is the same as for Digital Image entries. All entrants are requested to provide digital files of their entries at time of submission or no later than one week after the competition for the award winners. These to be attached to an email to either the Print Secretary or Webmaster. The club will continue to copy any traditional prints submitted by members or when no digital file has been received. In these cases there will a loss of quality, especially when projected. The photographer will retain copyright.

FINAL DECISION

The Print Secretary whose decision is final may remove any entries assigned to the wrong competition or breach these rules failing an agreed solution with the photographer.
