Distinctions Group

During the 2009/2010 Club season the Committee agreed to set up two special interest groups for those members who wished to improve their skills and expertise in particular areas of photography, including Distinctions. The other group is Natural History.

The Distinctions Group is open to all Club members who wish to gain photographic qualifications from the RPS and PAGB.

Rod Marsh agreed to be co-ordinator for the Distinctions Group. He has now reported on progress to date as follows:

distinctions group taking a breakMonday, 5th July saw the third meeting of the Distinctions Group and clear progress is being made by members.  The first meeting, in the pub, a few months ago with Frank Ash enabled the 8 members of the group to learn more about distinctions and the sources to which we can apply.

The second meeting with three members of the club who have been through the process armed us all with a feeling for how the process works and how fickle it can be as an exercise, but nonetheless an interesting challenge.

So the third meeting aimed at establishing what each person is doing and how much progress they have made.  This was a great opportunity to assist each other through friendly but critical comments on the prints being considered for inclusion in a submission and to draw strength from the group dynamic.

Interestingly the four members present on Monday had all decided to pursue PAGB distinctions, one at Distinction and three at Credit levels.  We were able to see prints or digital versions of images from each person which where being considered for submission.  The discussions on each image enabled us to offer advise and comments to the author on how to improve the image or maybe suggest removing it from the proposed submission because we thought it unsuitable.

distinctions group work in progress 2At the end of the evening it was evident that good progress had been made and each person present had between 50% to 75% of images needed for a submission. We all agreed that now is the time to start the application process to PAGB on an individual basis.

The next meeting will hopefully review progress by the other four members of the group, but is also open to new members.  We have already learned more for the group effort than we would have achieved individually so if anybody else would like to join us and make an application to RPS or PAGB just contact .
